the talks by vice president biden. the majority leader represented house republicans, jon kyl for senate republicans, and that vice president. they have been talking about all lot of cuts, both to discretionary and non- discretionary spending, but there the problem is that it does not seem to add at to what they would need to meet the president's requirements to get the country through the next election. that would be somewhere in the area of $2.4 trillion increase in the debt ceiling. john boehner has made it clear that for any increase in the debt ceiling, they will not need more than a one-one increased ratio. quite frankly the democrats have not agreed to that level of cuts. it looks like they will go back today, scour potential areas of saying that they have talked about, and see how much they can agree to and go from there. agree to and go from there. host: in your article from yesterday's with the headline " boehner tells conference big deal no longer operative," you said that there were criticisms for the grand bargain. he pays -- he faced opposition from eric cantor. they presen
whip jon kyl drew the line in the sand on sunday. >> unless the president gets off his absolute obsession with raising taxes, republicans won't do anything to harm our economy. job-killing taxes harm our economy. there will not be a default. as to whether or not we can achieve savings in the process dpentding on the president. >> i did not hear the world probably. i heard the word not. republicans would rather see the markets crash, unemployment go through the roof and americans in bread lines before they raise one damn dime in taxes. when it comes to the debt crisis, republicans are only interested in playing rush roulette with the stupid catchphrases. >> let's let the american people decide if they want like cutting spends, capping the growth in government and requiring a balanced budget amendment to the constitution. let's have a national debate. >> to cut cap and balance plan in the house. >> cut the deficit, put a straitjacket on it and balance the budget, the cut, cap and balance. >> i want to make sure we cut spending here in washington. i want to make smur we have a cap
the votes aren't there in the republican caucus that is what happened to jon boehner, he had this rug pulled out beyonded intramural bickering with eric cantor, perceived bickering. the republican leadership desai-- denies it exists but it apparent that cantor has been the spokesman and the leader of that group and the republican caucus that is most anti-tax. >> woodruff: and the president, david s still saying, he said i put on the table, and he still s entitlements, social security, medicare, medicaid. and he's saying this is something that republicans, an opportunity they passed up on. >> yeah, i'm not sure it is a little exaggerated to say he put it on the table. they may have been putting it on the table and smelled at roama from the kitchen. so it wasn't really on the table. so the aroma was-- . >> woodruff: it's not really an offer. >> it was never really materialized but it was a possibility worth exploring and the possibility worth exploring was raise the medicare eligibility, tying social security to a different inflation measure which would reduce the benefits and about $1.4 trill
in his district. in fact, the first one's going to be august 7th with jon huntsman. a little later in the month, august 25th, michele bachmann will appear. he says he's going to have all the questions come from the audience, they'll pick them out, whatever the question is, he will ask the candidate. this is pretty interesting, because on labor day, we'll see senator jim demint, south carolina senator, he's holding a similar type of forum. in the past it's been the media, been us, we've done a good job of it, but now the lawmakers want to get involved as well. >> i'm sure they do. mark, i want to ask you to stick around. this is rare. no real news value to this story, but this video has gone viral and we have to share this video of two dogs, one starts with a fight with his friend, then you see that? he gets bitten, then boom, this dog actually plays dead, then he gets up, does it again. you've got to watch this carefully. scuffle, bitten on the neck, boom, goes down, plays dead. then looks, is he still here? raises his head. isn't that hilarious? >> he deserves an oscar. good lord.
and there is still no agreement on what to do. sounds like a broken record. >> absolutely. as abc's jon karl reports it's not just democrats versus republicans, it's republicans versus republicans. >> reporter: john boehner is cracking the whip. he convened a meeting of all 240 house republicans today. sources who were there tell abc he had a blunt message for tea partyers. get your ass in line, he said, i can't do this job unless you are behind me. >> get you guys in line? >> we are a team, we are about trying to move the country forward. >> reporter: the tough talk does appear to be working. but it's not an easy sell. some of the tea partyers still just don't believe those dire warnings about government default. >> armageddon happens at midnight, august 3, is not the case, it is not true. >> reporter: kevin mccarthy, the third ranking republican in the house, urged republicans to unite behind boehner's plan by showing this clip from "the town." >> i need your help. i can't tell you what it is, you can never ask me about it later, we're going to hurt some people. >> which car we going to take? >> r

was going for it except for eric cantor and jon kyl. this time the crowd of opponents was bigger but one important person, john boehner. the important thing to remember here is scaling back from $4 trillion to 2.5 trillion does not make any of the big issues go away. sooner or later republicans are going to have to swallow some revenue increases. host: what is the purpose of today's news conference from the president? caller: the purpose for the president is to set a delicate balance. on the one hand he wants to claim the political high ground, i assume, saying that he tried and pushed for historic bipartisan achievement. unfortunately, we will like it there. the reason is that republicans will not sign on to a bold, $1 trillion tax overhaul. so, he wants to show the voters that he is the big negotiator. everything that he said the revlon in 2008. but he does not want to poison the well to make these negotiations for the rest of the week. >> what is the main message coming from republicans going into this meeting? >> it would seem that their main message is probably going to stay the sam
